DIAGNOSE BEFORE REINSTALLING

Clone Hero Troubleshooting Guide

Use the symptom to choose the right check: game launch and update failures, missing songs, bad chart reports, silent or two-second playback, custom visuals and controller mapping all have different causes.

Quick answer

Start with the smallest failing layer

If the game does not open, test the official standalone build and operating-system requirements. If the game opens but songs are missing, check paths, extraction, Scan Songs and badsongs.txt. If one song fails, inspect that chart rather than reinstalling Clone Hero.

Back up Songs, Custom and settings before updates or migrations. Avoid “repair” downloads from unofficial launchers, torrents or modified APK sites.

Fix Clone Hero songs not showing

If every song vanishes at once, a path or drive problem is more likely than thousands of charts breaking simultaneously. If only one chart is rejected, focus on that folder. Follow the full add songs tutorial for path and extraction examples.

  1. 1

    Open the configured folder

Use Open Default Songs Folder or inspect the song path manager. Confirm the drive is connected and the path still exists.

  2. 2

    Inspect one missing song

The real song folder should contain song.ini, notes.mid or notes.chart, and audio. Extract nested archives.

  3. 3

    Run Scan Songs

Changes do not appear until the scan completes. Record the good and bad song counts.

  4. 4

    Read badsongs.txt

Use the reported file path and error rather than moving every folder or repeatedly reinstalling the game.

  5. 5

    Remove duplicates

Keep one test version of a chart. Duplicate metadata can make it unclear which folder the game loaded.

  6. 6

    Add packs gradually

Import one batch, scan and test before copying another multi-gigabyte collection.

Song plays for two seconds, with no noise or notes

First confirm that the chosen instrument and difficulty exist. A guitar chart may not contain drums; an expert-only chart will not show an easy part. Search the chart metadata or select another available part before assuming the download is corrupt.

Next, open the song folder. Verify that the notes file and audio are present and that the archive is fully extracted. Separate audio stems are normal, but an empty or incomplete download can leave Clone Hero with metadata and no playable content. Review badsongs.txt and try a fresh copy from the original charter's page.

Test another known-good song. If only one track fails, replace that chart. If every track is silent, check in-game volume, Windows/macOS/Linux output selection, connected audio devices and exclusive-mode conflicts before editing chart files.

Fix Launcher, update and game-start problems

Verify that the download came from clonehero.net or a clonehero-game GitHub release destination. Standalone archives must be fully extracted; running an executable from inside a ZIP can prevent files from being written or found correctly. Check free disk space and operating-system prompts.

If the Launcher fails, try the current official standalone build. If standalone works, the game itself and basic graphics/audio environment are probably functional, which narrows the issue to Launcher networking, permissions or managed paths. If neither works, review the official common issues and installation pages for platform-specific requirements.

Do not overwrite an old installation blindly. Back up user content, install the current version cleanly, launch once, then restore configured song and custom-content folders.

Fix custom highways and colors

Static highways belong in Custom/Highways, animated highway videos in Custom/Video Highways and color profiles in Custom/Colors. Extract archives and run the current Scan Custom Images or Rescan Custom Content control in Settings → Gameplay.

If every custom asset is gone after an update, locate the active Custom folder for the new installation. If one asset fails, check its file format and replace it from the source. See the dedicated custom highway and custom color guides.

Fix guitar or controller input

Start by testing keyboard input in menus. If the keyboard works, the game launched correctly and the issue is likely controller detection, assignment or mapping. Confirm the controller and adapter model, driver requirements and the operating system device list.

Assign the controller to the correct player and map each fret, strum direction, Start and Select input. Wireless legacy guitars may require a platform-specific receiver; a charging cable does not always carry controller data. Test inputs in the mapping screen before loading a song.

When asking the community for help, include the guitar model, original console, adapter/receiver, OS, Clone Hero version and whether the device appears at system level. “My guitar does not work” omits the facts needed to diagnose the connection.

Create a useful Clone Hero troubleshooting report

When the checks above do not solve the issue, write down the Clone Hero version, operating system, installation method, exact symptom and the smallest repeatable steps. For song problems, include the chart source, package format, instrument, difficulty and relevant badsongs.txt line. For controllers, include the original console, receiver or adapter and whether the operating system detects input.

Change one variable at a time and report what happened. Testing a known-good chart, default color profile, static highway, keyboard input or clean standalone build creates a useful comparison. A focused Clone Hero troubleshooting report helps official documentation and community support distinguish a game defect from content, path, hardware or configuration problems.

Common questions

Clone Hero troubleshooting FAQ

Why are my downloaded Clone Hero songs not showing?

Confirm the song path, extract archives, verify song.ini plus notes and audio, run Scan Songs and read badsongs.txt.

Why does a song play for only two seconds?

Check that the selected instrument/difficulty exists, inspect notes and audio files, review badsongs.txt and test a clean copy from the original chart source.

Why is there no sound in Clone Hero?

Test a known-good chart, check in-game levels and the system output device. If one song is silent, inspect its audio files; if all songs are silent, focus on global audio settings.

Why did all songs disappear after an update?

The active song path may have changed or an external drive may be disconnected. Open the current default folder, restore/add the correct path and scan again.

Why are custom highways not appearing?

Use Custom/Highways for images or Custom/Video Highways for video, then rescan custom content and select the asset.

Should I reinstall Clone Hero to fix one bad song?

No. One failing chart is usually a song-folder problem. Use badsongs.txt and replace or repair that chart first.

Why does my guitar not work?

Confirm the correct receiver/adapter and OS detection, assign the controller to a player, then map every required input in Clone Hero.
