How to Download Custom Highways for Clone Hero
Install static or animated highway files in the correct Custom folder, rescan custom images and keep community visual assets separate from song folders.
Put highways in Custom, not Songs
Download a normal image or supported video highway from a community source, open Clone Hero's Custom folder, place static files in Highways and video files in Video Highways, then use Scan Custom Images or the current rescan control in Settings → Gameplay.
The official manual recommends a 512×1024 highway resolution. Static highway formats include PNG, JPG and JPEG; animated highway guidance uses compatible video formats such as WebM.
Clone Hero custom highway requirements
A highway is the visual lane surface behind notes. It is not a chart and does not belong in the global Songs folder unless it is intentionally packaged as song-specific content. Global highways go into the relevant subfolder of Custom.
Very large animated files can add loading and playback overhead. Prefer a clean loop with a sensible resolution and test it during a busy chart before keeping it enabled.
| Asset | Folder | Typical supported format | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| Static highway | Custom/Highways | PNG, JPG, JPEG | Use a 512×1024 image when possible |
| Animated highway | Custom/Video Highways | Compatible WebM/video format | Keep resolution and bitrate reasonable for smooth play |
| Song-specific highway | Inside the individual song folder when supported | Image or video | Use only when the visual belongs to that chart |
| Color profile | Custom/Colors | Profile file | This is separate from the highway image itself |
Install a custom highway step by step
- 1
Choose a trustworthy asset
Use a community page that previews the highway and states the format. A visual asset should not require an EXE installer.
- 2
Extract the archive
If the download is ZIP, RAR or 7z, extract it and locate the actual image or video file.
- 3
Open the current Custom folder
Use the in-game folder control or official path guidance. Typical and portable installations can use different locations.
- 4
Use the correct subfolder
Place images in Highways and compatible video loops in Video Highways. Do not place them in Colors or Songs.
- 5
Rescan custom content
Open Settings → Gameplay and run the current Scan Custom Images/Rescan Custom Content control.
- 6
Select and test
Choose the new highway in profile/gameplay settings and test visibility, contrast and performance in a real song.
Choose a highway that keeps notes readable
A highway can look impressive in a preview and still make gameplay harder. Busy textures, high-contrast stripes and bright detail directly under the note lanes can reduce readability. Test both normal notes and Star Power effects, and consider whether the image works with your chosen color profile.
Static images are a good starting point because they are lightweight and predictable. Animated highways should loop cleanly without rapid flashing or motion that competes with notes. Players sensitive to flashing or motion should avoid aggressive animation and use a calmer static design.
Keep the original download outside the live Custom folder as a backup. If an update, profile change or accidental overwrite removes the file, you can restore the asset without searching for an old community link.
Why a custom highway does not appear
Fix the path and format first, then rescan. Reinstalling the entire game is rarely the first useful response to one missing custom image. For broader issues, use the Clone Hero troubleshooting page.
- The archive was copied without extraction.
- The image is in Songs, Colors or the game executable folder instead of Custom/Highways.
- A video highway was placed in the static Highways folder.
- The file format or codec is not supported by the current version.
- Scan Custom Images/Rescan Custom Content was not run.
- The selected profile still points to a different highway.
- The game is using a different Custom folder because installation mode changed.
Organize custom highways for Clone Hero
Create a predictable naming system before downloading many custom highways for Clone Hero. Include the creator or collection name, a short visual description and whether the file is static or animated. A filename such as neon-grid-static.png is easier to recognize later than highway-final-2.png. Keep the original community page in a small source note so you can find version information or creator instructions after the download link changes.
Use group folders only when the current game version and Custom folder behavior support them, and keep static and video highways in their designated locations. Do not mix source archives with active files. Store ZIP, RAR or 7z downloads in a backup or staging directory; place only extracted, supported assets in the live Custom folders that Clone Hero scans.
Test custom highways for Clone Hero with more than one song. A highway can appear readable during a slow chart but obscure notes during fast strumming, Star Power or dense chords. Check the design with the color profile you actually use, at the display brightness and viewing distance of your normal setup. Keep a neutral high-contrast highway ready as a troubleshooting baseline.
For animated highways, test frame pacing and system load. If notes stutter or input feels inconsistent, switch to a static image and compare the same chart. Reduce unnecessary resolution, bitrate or animation complexity at the source instead of installing general codec packs. The goal is a stable visual loop that does not compete with timing-critical gameplay.
Back up the Custom folder before migrating or changing installation mode. After restoring, open the current Custom location from the running game, copy a small group first and rescan. When those custom highways for Clone Hero appear correctly, restore the remainder in batches. This makes an unsupported file or wrong subfolder easier to identify.
Remove assets deliberately. Deselect a highway before deleting its file, keep a backup if the source is rare, and rescan after cleanup. If thumbnails or old names remain, restart the game only after confirming the active folder and completing the custom-content scan.
Check a highway download before installation
- The page shows a real preview of the highway rather than unrelated artwork.
- The creator, format, dimensions and animation type are identified.
- The download contains an image or supported video, not an unknown installer.
- Any flashing, rapid movement or visibility warning is clear before use.
- The asset can be removed without replacing game executables or core files.
